CounselPro vs ChatGPT

A ChatGPT alternative for the whole record

Discovery arrives as thousands of pages across every account the other side held, in no order at all. CounselPro takes the production as it came, splits it into statement cycles, and reads every one of them in the same pass, with each row keeping the page it was read off.

What a chat window holds

OpenAI’s own published limits

Put OpenAI's published numbers next to a discovery production and the arithmetic makes the argument. CounselPro takes the production in one go, splits it into statement cycles, and reads all of them in the same pass.

File size
OpenAI caps a file uploaded to ChatGPT at 512 MB. One scanned statement rarely troubles that. A production served as a single PDF can.
Upload rate
OpenAI publishes 80 file uploads every three hours, and three a day on the free plan. A production of 66 statement files is a scheduling problem before it is an analysis.
Custom GPTs
A custom GPT holds 10 knowledge files for the lifetime of that GPT. Six accounts and a year of cycles do not fit in one.
What a conversation holds
OpenAI publishes no single per-plan limit for how much one conversation can hold. It depends on which model your plan gives you, and the plans and models change through the year.
What the answers are for
OpenAI’s own guidance is to treat ChatGPT as a first draft rather than a final source, and to verify quotes, data and technical information. On a figure going in front of a judge, that verification is the work.

ChatGPT is a product of OpenAI. The figures above are OpenAI’s own, from its help centre and pricing pages, checked on 3 September 2026. Plans, models and limits move, so check them again before you rely on them.

How a production is read

Findings that need every account

Transfers, structuring, income and gaps

6 accounts · 65 statement cycles · one workspace · ask it in plain English

Money moving between your client’s own accounts

A payment out of the operating account and into a personal one is a transfer only if both statements sit in the same place. Read apart, the same dollar counts as income in one account and as spending in the other. Held together, it is marked internal and counts once.

Cash landing just under the reporting line

Three deposits of $9,400 across eight days, spread over two accounts, is a pattern a trustee reads twice. In one account on its own it is a Tuesday. The report names the pattern and prints the dates it rests on.

The income the deposits actually show

Income computed from deposits across every account, with internal transfers, refunds and loan proceeds taken out, is the figure a support fight turns on, and it is regularly a different number from the one on the schedules.

The account-month still to ask for

A gap exists only against a full account picture. An estate reconstructed from whatever the family kept is read the same way: every account, every month, and the months still to ask for named one by one.

The whole case in one register

Twelve months, six accounts, one line a month

A month of the Ashcroft Millwork matter is five or six statement cycles across the operating account, the payroll account, the merchant deposits, the cards and the personal accounts underneath them. Rolled together, it reads as one line. Read apart, there is no line to write.

Money out ran ahead of money in for eight of the twelve months. March carries four cycles rather than five and says why, so nobody reads that row as a full month. Every figure is computed in a calculator that prints its inputs beside the result, and every row opens the statement page it was read off.

Money moved between the company’s own accounts is marked internal and left out of both columns, so a dollar that crossed from the operating account to a personal one counts once.

How every cycle gets balanced

Which default applies to you

Personal plan, business plan, and ours

Bank records in a support fight, a trustee’s lookback or a fraud claim belong to the client, and the duty follows them into whatever window you paste them into. ABA Rule 1.6 and Formal Opinion 512 ask you to weigh where a client’s information goes before it goes there, and to get informed consent when the risk calls for it. With a chat product, the weighing starts with which plan the file went into.

OpenAI’s data controls and pricing pages, checked on 3 September 2026. A default can change, and a privileged file should not rest on which way a setting was left.

How the data is held
A personal plan shares by default
OpenAI publishes that on Free, Plus and Pro in a personal workspace, data sharing is on by default, and that you can opt out under Settings and Data Controls.
A business plan runs the other way
OpenAI publishes that ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API do not use inputs and outputs to train models by default. A standard business seat is priced per user per month.
CounselPro puts it in the agreement
Documents are encrypted on the way in and while they sit with us, the infrastructure underneath is checked by outside auditors, and no client document, figure or export trains a model. The agreements we sign say so.

CounselPro vs ChatGPT questions, answered

What attorneys weighing the two ask first

Can ChatGPT analyze bank statements?
It can read one. Paste a single statement into ChatGPT and it will pull the transactions out and reason about them, and on one month it does that well. A matter is not one month. A discovery production is a year or more of cycles across every account the other side held, and the work is splitting all of it into statements, measuring each cycle against the totals the bank printed, and keeping a link from every row back to the page it came off. That is what CounselPro does with the production as it arrived.
How many bank statements can you upload to ChatGPT at once?
OpenAI publishes a 512 MB cap on any single file, 80 file uploads every three hours, three uploads a day on the free plan, and 10 knowledge files for the lifetime of a custom GPT. It publishes no single per-plan limit for how much one conversation can hold, because that depends on which model your plan gives you. A production of 66 statement files against those numbers is a scheduling exercise. CounselPro takes the production in one go and reads every cycle in the same pass.
Is it safe to upload client bank statements to ChatGPT?
That is your call to make under ABA Rule 1.6 and Formal Opinion 512, which asks you to weigh where a client’s information goes before it goes there, and to get informed consent when the risk calls for it. Two published facts are worth having first. OpenAI says that on Free, Plus and Pro in a personal workspace, data sharing is on by default, with an opt-out in the settings. It says that on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and the API, inputs and outputs are not used to train models by default. So the answer for a firm depends on which plan the file went into. With CounselPro the documents are encrypted, the infrastructure is independently audited, and no client record trains a model.
Why does ChatGPT give a different total each time you ask?
A chat answer is generated fresh each time, and what the model has in front of it changes with what you pasted and how long the conversation has run. CounselPro pins the numbers to the record instead. Every statement cycle is balanced to its own printed opening and closing totals, every sum runs in a calculator that prints its inputs beside the result, and a figure the records cannot support is left open and flagged for you. The bank’s own printed totals settle the answer, so it reads the same on Monday and on Thursday.
When is ChatGPT the better tool?
Whenever the work is writing and thinking rather than counting. Drafting a motion, working an argument through, summarizing a deposition, reading one statement to get your bearings: ChatGPT is good at all of it and CounselPro does none of it. Reach for CounselPro when a number has to survive the other side reading it.
