Brokerage and investment statements

Coming Q4 2026

Follow the money into shares

An investment account is where cash stops looking like cash: it becomes shares, pays a dividend that buys more shares, gets sold, and leaves as cash again. CounselPro reads brokerage and retirement statements the way it reads bank statements, with every holding, trade and gain checked against the totals the statement printed.

Cases that turn on a brokerage account

A bank ledger shows cash moving. A brokerage statement shows what it became, and that is usually where the question a case turns on is answered.

Cases

Where the money changed form

Divorce

An account left off the financial disclosure still paid a dividend into checking last July, and the estate is being divided on a brokerage value from two years ago.

Probate

The family kept a drawer of statements and the court wants the portfolio reconstructed: what was held, what it was worth, and what was sold in the last year.

Bankruptcy

Cash moved into a retirement account in the weeks before filing. The statements say what was bought with it, and the trustee wants the dates.

Fraud and business litigation

Shares were sold and the proceeds went somewhere. The sale is on one statement, the wire out is on the next, and the account it landed in is on neither.

The portfolio dashboard

Every holding, trade and gain

Each investment statement in the stack comes back as four tables: what was held at period end, what was bought and sold, what each sale realized, and the cash that moved. Every row carries the page it was printed on, so a figure in the table is a figure you can open.

Accuracy

Checked against the printed totals

A brokerage statement prints a total for every section it carries. CounselPro adds each section up and compares it to that line, and a section that comes up short is read again against the page image until the figures match what the statement printed.

Holdings

Every position at period end, and the four values added up against the market value the statement prints.

72,146.36

Matches p. 2

Activity

Every buy, sell, dividend, contribution and distribution, dated and signed, and totalled against the section line.

31 entries

Matches p. 5 to 28

Realized gains

Each closed position with its proceeds, its cost, and the gain, split long and short term as the statement splits it.

7,668.24

Matches p. 27

Cash

The money that came in and went out, read on its own ledger beside the bank statements, so the transaction totals stand on their own.

58,700.00

Out on p. 28

What the account was worth

Every statement prints a market value at period end, and every period end is on the page. Value the estate on the quarter the court cares about, and show the page that says so.

Value

As the statement printed it

Where the value went

The account grew on a contribution in October and fell in February on a sale and a transfer out. Both are dated, and both keep their page.

The trail an undisclosed account leaves

An account that was left off the disclosure is still wired to the accounts that were on it. Cash goes out to it as a transfer, a dividend comes back from it, and each one is a row on a statement you already hold. CounselPro reads the bank statements and the brokerage statements as one case, so the transfer out of checking and the shares it bought sit in the same table.

Scope

What the securities read covers

Statements
Brokerage, investment and retirement statements, read alongside the bank, credit card and check statements in the same case.
Sections
Holdings at period end, buy and sell activity, dividends and distributions, realized gains and losses, and the cash that moved. Each is checked against the total the statement prints for it.
Cash ledger
The securities read stands beside the transaction ledger rather than inside it. The bank-statement totals are their own record, and a brokerage page adds to the case without touching them.
Credits
A brokerage or investment statement page costs two credits, because it packs far more onto each page than a bank statement does. Bank, card and check pages cost one.
Plans
Coming in the fourth quarter of 2026 on Single Project, Plus and Premier. You are billed for the capability when it ships, and only then.
Custody
Statements are encrypted on the way in and while they sit with us, the infrastructure we run on is checked by outside auditors, and client records are never used to train a model.

Bring the account you doubt

Start with the brokerage statements from the account whose value nobody agrees on, or the checking statements with a dividend arriving from an account that is on no list. That is the file worth testing this on.
