# Why does my invitation email not match?

> An invitation is tied to the exact email it was sent to. If you sign in with a different address, it won't match. Use the invited email or ask for a new one.

An invitation is locked to the one email address it was sent to. If you open the link but sign in with a different address, CounselPro cannot match you to the invite, and it stops you rather than adding the wrong account.

## Why this happens

Say the invite went to `jordan@firm.com`, but you signed in with `jordan@gmail.com` or an older work address. Even though it is you, CounselPro only accepts the address the invitation names. The mismatch is a safety check, so an invite meant for one person cannot be claimed from another login.

## How to fix it

You have two clean options:

- **Sign in with the invited address.** Log out, then log back in (or sign up) using the exact email the invitation was sent to. If you are not sure which address that was, check the inbox where the invitation arrived.
- **Ask for a new invite to the address you want.** If you would rather use a different email, ask whoever invited you to revoke the old invitation and send a new one to that address. See [how do I revoke a pending invitation](https://www.counselpro.ai/docs/revoke-an-invitation).

This is not the same as an expired or broken link. If the link itself does not open the join screen at all, see [why is my invitation link invalid or expired](https://www.counselpro.ai/docs/invitation-invalid-or-expired).
